You know how they say to “fake it ‘til you make it?” Here’s how to look like a sommelier when you don’t know corked.

• Hold your glass by its stem, not the bowl. Bowl-holding is for amateurs and you’re looking to impress.

• Even if you’re dying of thirst, just pour a few drops into your glass—no more than an inch or two.

• Hold the glass up and give it a tilt. Stare intently. Think about how good it’s going to taste going down. Now gently swirl the wine around for about 20 seconds. Don’t splash!

• Now see how it smells. Don’t give it a big honking snort, just a few delicate sniffs.
